Go-Kart Documentary,
Iranian Drama Win Top Tribeca Film Awards

May 1 (Bloomberg) -- “Racing Dreams,” a documentary about young go-kart racers who dream of becoming professional race-car drivers, and “About Elly,” an Iranian drama about a tragic reunion of college friends, won the top awards at the Tribeca Film Festival.

“Racing Dreams, directed by Marshall Curry, was honored as best documentary feature. Curry’s “Street Fight” won the audience award at the 2005 Tribeca festival and was nominated for an Oscar.

Asghar Farhadi’s “About Elly” won the award for best narrative feature. Farhadi won best-director honors for the movie at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.

The Tribeca winners were announced last night at a ceremony in New York. The 12-day festival, co-founded by Robert De Niro, closes Sunday.

Ciaran Hinds won for best actor in a narrative feature for his performance as an Irish widower in “The Eclipse.” Zoe Kazan won the best-actress award for “The Exploding Girl,” in which she plays an epileptic college student.

The winners of the narrative feature and documentary awards each receive $25,000. There were 12 entries in both categories.

Jurors for the narrative award included actresses Meg Ryan and Uma Thurman, and director Todd Haynes. The documentary panel included comedian/actress Whoopi Goldberg, filmmaker Morgan Spurlock and NBC News anchor Brian Williams.
